Day 26 5/23/01 Mile 2513 Calgary, AB This morning was gear repair and maintenance time. I had some sewing repairs to do on the packs, where I had stuffed a bit too much in and a seam started ripping. I carry a sewing needle inside a little container of dental floss for repairs such as this; it's a strong thread. I stopped a my favorite outdoor store, Mountain Equipment Co-op, to pick up a few small items and see if anything sparked ideas. Then got some AAA maps, and...went to work, just like the responsible citizen I am, of course. There was some Linux work that needed done at the Jason Geosystems office...so...darn, I did it again, working on a vacation. But I didn't mind. It was a change of pace, and it was just more efficient to do it while I was already here. So I spent the rest of the day there, merrily punching away at the keyboard. Later, I walked around town a bit, which is a lot of fun in Calgary. It's a very athletic place - there are paths everywhere, and the rollerbladers, bikers, and joggers take full advantage of it, especially when the weather is as beautiful as today. There were a whole lotta sunburned people out getting their share of the sunshine, I chuckled to myself. A fair amount of people bike to work here, since the city planners laid out sensible routes for it to make it easy (and also, parking is terribly expensive!). That night I went with Alana, another employee at the office, to a pub to catch one of the local bands playing. Always sample the local color of the town you're in! I met some of her friends in this northern town - I didn't have an English-Canadian dictionary to translate with, but Alana helped me along with the vocabulary, including the gratuitous "Ay" at the end of sentences. A fun time was had by all, ay?
